Educational Philosophy
I believe children learn best in an environment that lets them be active participants in the classroom. Through active participation students become motivated learners. Learning content material becomes fun and interesting! This type of atmosphere also allows students to draw upon their own experiences from their diverse backgrounds in order to problem solve and develop critical thinking and communication skills necessary in their academic learning and in life.
My classroom is organized to reflect student-centered learning. The manner in which I present grade level content material, the organization of my classroom, and the teaching methods I utilize are all designed to create a classroom of learners who collaborate, critique each others' thinking and actively participate in the learning process .
Content is presented in a way to allow students to engage in inquiry based learning in order to have meaningful, learning experiences. They are encouraged to express ideas of how they want to further investigate the curriculum’s content material. This process fosters active participation of the students to give direction to their problem solving, whether they are in a whole group, small group or individual learning settings. As knowledge and skills are acquired, students will be able to apply both to real life situations outside the classroom as well as through project-based learning experiences.
The curriculum we are using in 8th grade science is from MiSTAR. The link below is provides a short slide presentation on our districts science curriculum.
